The Project

In December, German designer Basse Stittgen is coming for a production residency in preparation for the upcoming collective exhibition ‘Design Sediments’, set to open at the Huidenclub in Rotterdam at the end of January. For this project curated by Olivier Zeitoun and Leo Orta, Stittgen will be creating new pieces at the Foundation exploring the potential offered between two polymers derived from spruce wood when reconnected: lignin and cellulose. During the initial phase he will explore the François 1er wood and the surrounding forests to create casts of local spruce bark. Using these molds, he will experiment with combining the polymers from this wood to create a series of furniture objects that make tangible the invisible processes at work within the forest while emphasizing connections to the source of their materials.

Additionally, the designer will conduct a workshop for students from the DNMADE program at the Charles Augustin Coulomb High School in Angoulême, allowing them to explore his itinerant MovingMatter Lab.

Basse Stittgen graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2017 and since then his work has been exhibited at the V&A Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the NGV Melbourne and the 13th Shanghai Biennale of Architecture. It is part of the collection of the MAK Vienna, the Fundatie Museum Zwolle and the Wellcome Collection.
